The Tellonym app isn’t new per se. It first reared it’s head back in 2016 when it launched in Germany. But it now claims to have a bout 8 million users worldwide. Available on iOS and Android, the app is fast becoming, in 2018, the go to destination for young people to visit.

In theory there shouldn’t be an issue, as it’s just one of a number of platforms designed for people to ‘speak the truth’ whilst hiding behind their keyboards and anonymity.

The anonymous app trend really peaked a couple of years ago with a multitude of platforms vying for young people’s attention, Peach, Yik Yak, Secret, Confide and even the original Ask FM. But it seems that the idea of anonymity is still attractive. as this app is sweeping across schools in the north of England in particular.

This is just a short post to put the App icon out there. The messaging is the same as we have put out before. Should you see this app icon on your child’s smart device, it might be a good time to have a conversation with them about the kind of information they are sharing through the app. Are they putting inappropriate content on the internet that could be attributed to their online reputation in the future, or are they perhaps using the channel to direct negative and hateful content towards others, thinking again that it will never be traced back to them.

As I am sure you’re aware by now, there is really very little in the way of actual privacy online and the idea of anonymity is flawed. The only way to ensure that your online reputation stays in tact is to really think about the kind images, video and written content you are sharing out there. Being a cyberbully stays with you forever, thinking you’re safe behind a fake profile is a recipe for hurt and disappointment further down the line.

Marketing itself as ‘the most honest place on the internet’ millions of young people are sharing information and images about themselves with strangers and asking for their opinion. That opinion sometimes comes in the form of vitriol and hate, that for some young minds, it’s hard to process and understand. The world, and the online world especially, is a sometimes dark and unforgiving place. We need to make sure our little ones and not so little ones are aware of what they can do to stay as safe as possible.
